Duke Health Site - Usability Test Project

This project was assigned as part of a graduate level class on Usability Testing (INLS 719). I was part of a team of three students who wanted to analyze the usability of Duke Health’s main website (DukeHealth.org).

User research is perhaps the most exciting part of UX work for me. This project provided great experience in researching, designing, and facilitating user testing for a website.

Scope

Our evaluation focused on the site’s information architecture, search engine, “find a provider” engine, and navigation menu.

Participant Tasks

After thoroughly exploring Duke Health’s website, my team created a list of 5 tasks to give participants as a usability test. These items were:

  1. Find information for scheduling a colonoscopy (without using search bar).

  2. Find the contact information and hours for Duke Children’s Specialty Services of Raleigh (without using search bar).

  3. Find out how to contact Duke’s children’s pulmonology department.

  4. You want to schedule an Urgent Care visit. Find out which types of insurance are accepted and how much your total cost would be.

  5. Schedule a flu shot.

My responsibilities in the test environment:

  • Provide participants with an overview of the usability test procedure, equipment, and software

  • Ensure participant consent forms had been signed

  • Make sure that participant’s testing hardware and software are intact prior to start of test

Remote Work Experience

This project came with the additional challenge of fully remote collaboration. I never saw my teammates or instructor in person, all information was conveyed over zoom, screen sharing, email, and shared documents. It is one of two projects in this portfolio that was carried out fully remotely, and has made me more than comfortable with digital collaboration.
